Let's Be Real

Happy New Year! Where are you at? Are you the type that makes a long list of resolutions? Do you have one main goal that you are focused on? Did you create a SMART goal, making sure you have it all broken down and measurable? Do you refuse, assuming it'll just be just another intention that isn't fulfilled?

Every January, I find myself in the mood to purge! There is something about the new year that really accelerates these feelings. I put all the holiday decor away (on Christmas day, a bit Grinchy I know), and suddenly I want every area of my home clean, organized and refreshed! It is exhilarating at first, but it can quickly become overwhelming. I find myself looking around and wanting to change EVERYTHING. My poor husband has to hear about my desires to redesign the office, purchase new living room furniture, and do a total overhaul on the laundry room.

The truth is I do not have a magic wand. I do not get to put into motion every idea that is swimming in my head. When I start wanting to change everything in my home, I need to take a minute to prioritize and organize. If I could only change one space, which would I choose? If I don't have the budget to do everything I want with that space, what steps can I take to move things in the right direction?

Obviously, I'd love to completely redo our office. I would be thrilled with new living room furniture! Some women want designer purses and shoes, I'd take a new console table any day. I dream of a beautiful laundry room that just functions better, one that you don't have to haul the clothes to another room to fold. All of these things won't happen this year. That's not reality.

Let's be real, I can improve these areas. I can get things moving in the right direction. I just can't have it all immediately. Time to prioritize and make things happen. For now, I am choosing to focus on that office. It is currently a bit of a dumping ground, and it should be a gorgeous feature in my home. First things first, it needs to be decluttered and organized. Fresh paint is always a quick an easy update. Adding a little paneling to the walls would really elevate the space. I'm hoping to add a new desk and credenza. Our current desk just isn't functioning well for what we need. A few trips to the Room and Board Outlet might need to happen. Who doesn't love a little furniture hunting adventure! A more dramatic light fixture would really complete the space! I'm excited to turn this concept into reality!

If you could only update one space in your home, what would it be? Remember, it doesn't need to be an entire room. It could be a closet, the top of your dresser, or the shelving in a bathroom. What is one thing you can put into motion? Even if it is adding labeled baskets to a closet, do it. Every time you see that space it'll make you happy knowing you improved a bit of your home. Your home doesn't need to be overwhelming, keep it simple. Progress happens one step at a time. As always, I'm here to help if you need me.
